8 Reasons For Us To Go To Church
1. To Hear the Preaching of the Word of God
There are many people who are unable to go to church because of physical reasons. However, for those of us who are not impeded by physical reasons; it is very vital for our spiritual growth that we go to assemble with fellow believers in Jesus Christ. In proverbs 27:17 the bible tells us that “Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.” Many people are substituting going to church by watching preachers on televised program. Don’t get me wrong!!! There are many things that we can learn from other servants of God. However, without living in close fellowship and relationship with other believers we can never experience the help, hope and true togetherness that Jesus offers to “His Body – The Church.” Just as the different parts of our bodies need each parts so that it can function properly; in the same way we must assemble together to gain strength from each other; not to mention the warmth of a hug that no television Ministry can give. Please understand that it is very important to join and not just join but also make commitment with a local Bible believing, Jesus following church; where you can assemble and fellowship with other Believers so you can grow up in the faith and have maturity and accountability. Why? because it is biblical and it is also healthy. Every letter in the New Testament was addressed to churches because Christians must be members of local assembly. The assembling together teaches us how to get along with other members, how to encourage the weak among us. How to conduct ourselves and what to do with unrepentant sinners in the church. God’s words command us to submit to our elders, and encourage us to go to our elders to pray for us. All these things are impossible if we are not member of a local church. (See 1 and 2 Corinthians, James, Ephesians, 1 and 2 Timothy, and 1 Peter for references.) God commands His Servants to preach His words for the edification of Christ Body. It is through the preaching of sound doctrine that through the Word of God:
- We learn of God’s Everlasting Love to all
- Hearts are penetrated and lives transformed
- Sinners are called to repentance
- The saints are equipped.
- Those who feel weak are strengthened
- Encourage to love one another
- We stand together in unity
- It taught us to overcome and endure to the end
2. To Worship Together With Our Brothers and Sisters
Worshiping God alone is wonderful, but nothing can replace the beauty of coming together with fellow Believers to worship. The Bible tells us to: “Behold how good and pleasant to dwell together in unity” ( We are also encouraged by the word of God to: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name” (Psalm 100:1-4).
The Bible teaches us that God His a spirit ant that He must be worshipped in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24). True worship comes from a heart that is completely surrendered to God. That is when we realize that worshiping God comes as a response to our humble gratitude for His love for us all. The Spirit of God enables true worshippers to come together with other believers; to honour Jesus our Saviour. If God’s Spirit does not birth in us the desire to worship God first in our home and in our church, then it is time to ask God to show us why.
3. Because Iron Sharpens Iron
In Proverbs 27:17 the bible tells us “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Coming together with other Believers is a source of encouragement and strength. We get encouraged when we realized that we are not alone in the situation. Working alongside Christians in a church setting is a wonderful way to grow your love for God and for others. And it is also God’s way of showing you areas He wants to mature in your walk with Christ.
If you’ve stopped attending church because people hurt you, didn’t measure up to your expectations, know that the enemy has you right where he wants you. Satan’s tactic is to divide and conquer. If he can pull you from the flock, you are vulnerable to his deceptions and attacks. Satan will use your lack of love for God and for God’s people to lead you astray.
4. To Encourage Your Pastor
God is the one who gave pastors after His own heart to feed the flock with knowledge and understanding; according to Jeremiah 3:15. All pastors chosen and appointed by God will always look at the flock of Jesus with a heart of compassion. Know this, they will have to give account to God one day for your soul; good or bad. In jeremiah 23:1, pastors are warned by God “Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord.” Therefore, when you become a partner in ministry with your pastor you bring joy to his heart, grow his love for you, and cause him to joyfully thank God for your faithful service to Christ and to your brothers and sisters. One most amazing way to be an encourager to and for your pastor is to commit pray for him and his family daily.
5. You Will Find Godly Counsel
Psalm 1:1 tell us that, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” God wants all His children with only His counsel because He knows that we will get led astray through and by ungodly counsel. God also shows us in Titus 2 the incredible counsel of men and women in the faith. Through this Godly plan outlined in Titus 2; the older men and women are commanded to teach sound doctrine; which is godly counsel to train the younger men and women in godliness. in so doing, they will guide them toward building a life of true surrender and service to Jesus. These a mature men and women who have walked the road before you and so through their godly wisdom, insights, and even vulnerability to teach you from their mistakes is one way God provides to help you grow. Not only is the church a wonderful place to find godly counsellors, it is also where God may use you to counsel and someone else too.
6. To be a Light To The Community
Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:16 “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Satan wants to destroy any sense of love and community in the body of Christ. When you commit to loving God and loving others, the light shining from your Christ-honouring life is what the Holy Spirit can use to draw others to know Jesus.Everyone is looking for acceptance and a place to belong. Whether people admit it or not, they all long to be known and to be loved. When God’s people commit to openly love each other such love will be a light that shines brightly in a crooked and perverse generation. Let it begin with you.
7. To Bear Each Other’s Burdens
We are taught in Galatians 6:2, to bear each other’s burdens to fulfill the law of Christ. Life can be hard. In a moment everything can change. However if we have the loving concern, support, and prayer; then it can make things so much easier. My heart goes out to those who we’ve seen come to church when life is hard and then when their needs are met, they fall away again––only to come back when there’s another disaster. While we are happy to help them, we know the real help they need is a genuine relationship with Jesus and His people. If you’re accustomed to only going to church when you have a need, why don’t you try going when you’re doing well, try some consistency and see what God will do. Maybe God will use you to be an encouragement to others who are looking for help. Ask God to help you to develop a genuine love for Jesus and as you come and not forsake assembling there is so much to grasp and learn to help you along this path.
8. Because God Says To
The Bible tells us in Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” God desire to have us regularly assemble together with one another. God wants us- His people, to exhort one another especially as the days grow darker and the time of Christ’s return approaches. Even when you don’t feel like it please go to church. No television programs can substitute assembling personally with fellow believers and if you feel discouraged it is the place where you can be encouraged through God’s word. Many people left church because they felt hurt or they were disappointed. Can you imagine that when we get disappointment from your family members that you leave them and do not go back to see them ever. Church families are like physical families. You are around them so much that you rub each other the wrong way and people get hurt. If you gave up on anything that brought you pain, your life would be dull, bland, self-absorbed and lonely, while lacking any real adventure, growth, achievement and love. This page was created because of a question to God as to why some people left our church and as I googled in my search; I noticed that others wrote about this problem too. My encouragement to you as a follower of Jesus whether you are a new convert or a veteran – let us all walk according to Matthew 18:15 “Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.” Our goal is to hear, do and live what jesus say in John 13:34-35 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” However, if we walk away because we become offended for whatever reason; then we give space to the enemy and he gets a foothold into our lives which will sever instead of binding together.
